Loaded with the Sudanese
My boat is loaded with sundanesere and cardboard boxes, refrigerators, things & stuff & other ... I thought it was the Titanic who came to retrieve everything that was on the pier, but it was my boat, one of two that runs once a week.
I'm on the boat that goes from Aswan and it takes us over the "Lake Nasser" to the Sudanese border. The boat goes at one o'clock the skipper said, and it departured at 17.15.The boat will arrive at lunch tomorrow said Popeye. We will see, and in the meantime I'm admirer the sustainability of the guys on the pier. I have nver seen anyone carry so much, and the best man took a refriguator on his back and went down in the boat.
Nasser Lake, the lake created by Egypt and it provides electricity. The lake that has good fish and crocodiles. The lake that was a valley where the Nubian people lived. Kings of the Nile and all boats with sails. They have not extended the valley, but they are still sailing and they have power.
I have found a sleeping space on the port side. There are Arabic herrings in a barrel, and everyone shares what they have of food and nuts. At about 23.30 the last prayer was finished. I have a thin blanket under me against the steel deck. Above me, I have the Arabic scarf and I look up on the sky and can see about 10 billion stars. Dark as ink and the Egyptians whispere a little to the left. They will do some tradeing in Karthoum. The Frenchman "Olivier" is now my friend me and sleeps by my left leg. A Sudanese big toe is constantly on in my right ear. Herring in a barrel, but the Arab toes are freshly washed. Always good footwash before the last prayer.
Wondering what awaits in Wadi Halfa, my first meeting with Sudan. One village one kilometer from the border.
Think it'll be fine. Will have a humble head, use my newly converted "desert-rooles" and find out more about the people and this huge country where they created the first pyramids.
About 6000 years ago.
I've been on tour for about 8 months.
